The Legacy of Bing Exhibit Closes May 15!

Exhibit runs through May 15
Check out photos from the event HERE
Bing Copeland began surfing in 1949, at age 13, at the Manhattan Beach pier with his friend Greg Noll, who was a bait boy on the end of the pier. Bing and Greg were surfing gremmies that began their friendship hanging on the railing watching the older guys surf the big heavy redwood boards. Bing opened his first surf shop in the fall of 1959.

We're displaying a timeline of Bing surfboards-with an emphasis on original classics-up through the transition years, and culminating with the latest models being produce by Matt Calvani at the Bing factory. We'll also have historic photos, vintage ads and other material from Bing's 55 years in the business.

Last October during the Boardroom at the OC Fairgrounds, I casually mentioned to Bing that I’d like to do an exhibit of his boards. He was probably thinking, “yeah, right, we’ll see,” but being the gentleman that he is, he kept that to himself. Well, here it is less than half a year later and we’ve pulled it off. Thanks in great part to Bing collector, Tom Moss, we were able to gather and display an amazing cross-section of mint and cherry Bings, highlighting his ‘60s and ’70s classic longboard and transition era shapes and designs. I’d like to thank Margaret and Matt Calvani and the Bing shop in Encinitas for sharing some new models from the current Bing line. Matt has taken up where Bing left off, and continues to push the design envelope with some updates on the classics and all new shapes that spark the imagination in the fun factor realm of surfing. I’d also like to thank Bing for his contributions to making the show a reality, to my coworkers for indulging me to do this show during a time when we’re all already working past our breaking points, to our sponsors at Daphne’s California Greek, Primo Beer, and Hawaiian Spring Waters, and lastly, to Hal Forsen for his invaluable help during the exhibit install.

Early Overhead Shot of Rincon

Items get dropped off here on a weekly basis, sometimes without any notes or information to let us know who it belongs to, if it's a photo - who the photographer was and when it might have been taken. Nothing. But this one was just too good to resist, so we've posted it here in the hopes it sparks someone's recollection. Early Rincon on what looks to be a decent swell.

A letter written by Dale Velzy to Bruce Brown. Velzy bought Bruce a movie camera and sent him to the North Shore to film. The resulting movie was Slippery When Wet. The transcription can be read as follows:
Oct. 31, 1958

Dear Bruce,

How’s the movie coming along? Bet the boys are at each others throats by now, huh.

Do me a favor and go to Waikiki to the Outrigger and see if there are a pair of shorts by M. Knee (sp. MNii) for me. If you can’t locate them for me at the Outrigger, get in touch with M. Knee and have him send them to me here, O.K.??

Did you guys get any surf at Ala Moana Monday – we had it 8ft. here.

Did you pick up the tripod at the Matson Docks?

Has Byron got his board yet? Remember I wrote it would be at the Princess Kaiolani with my father-in-law? It’s under the name of “Ace Beal.”

What’s happening over there, haven’t heard from you in a week – how ‘bout writing!!

Oh & one last thing, is Conrad happy with his board?

            Nuff for now————— Dale

P.S. I have sent Cooper’s (?) C. check

Digital Watermarking of our images – Public Notice

As part of our commitment to protecting our image donors, the Surfing Heritage Foundation has begun using digital watermarking on ALL of our images, including those images seen on our website. This watermark is not visible to the eye, but is easily seen by many computer programs such at Photoshop and other image editing programs. In addition, we have also purchased a “watermark spider” that crawls the Internet specifically looking for any images that contain our SHF watermark. The Surfing Heritage Foundation is prepared to take the appropriate action should we find any illegal or unlicensed usage of images from our files.
