Eddie Aikau and PT

This shot came to us from Mark Foo's sister, Sharlyn along with one of Mark's big wave guns (which will be featured as the next Gem of the Week). This image of Eddie Aikau and Peter "PT" Townend was taken during one of the mid-seventies World Cup contests. Held at Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu, probably around the time the Australians were making their presence known by "Bustin' Down the Door". This raised a few hackles among the native Hawaiians, and Eddie played the diplomat to help soothe things down. Tragically just a couple years later, he would be lost at sea while attempting to paddle for help for the sinking ship the Hōkūle'a he was crewing on.

Thank you Gary Linden and the crew from the Big Wave World Tour!

Congratulations to Jamie Sterling being crowned the Big Wave World Tour Champ
and to Marcos Monteiro for receiving the Jim Beam Bold Award!
It was an amazing turnout and event, see you next year!
Here's an article in SurferMag.com and another in the OC Register covering the event. Thank you to all the volunteers and sponsors, everyone had a great time! We're working on putting together a website feature on the history of Big Wave riding, the preview of which was shown on Saturday night. Stay tuned...

Photography Workshop with ART BREWER to be Rescheduled

Surfing Heritage Photography Workshop
conducted by legendary photographer ART BREWER on Intermediate Surf Action and Lifestyle Techniques
We are going to reschedule the workshop for later this summer. Some of the equipment we will be using will not be available until then and we feel the weather conditions will be more favorable as well. We apologize and will announce the details when they are confirmed.

Digital Watermarking of our images – Public Notice

As part of our commitment to protecting our image donors, the Surfing Heritage Foundation has begun using digital watermarking on ALL of our images, including those images seen on our website. This watermark is not visible to the eye, but is easily seen by many computer programs such at Photoshop and other image editing programs. In addition, we have also purchased a “watermark spider” that crawls the Internet specifically looking for any images that contain our SHF watermark. The Surfing Heritage Foundation is prepared to take the appropriate action should we find any illegal or unlicensed usage of images from our files.
