Venice Pier, Sept. 1940. Tommy Zahn collection.

September 1940 - the surfing area just north of Sunset Pier, with Venice Pier visible on the right. Note the interesting architecture of the building in the background, possibly some sort of amusement ride. Photo from the Tommy Zahn Collection.

Dear & Yonder Artwork and Photographs

As part of our screening of Dear & Yonder, we have a display of artwork and photographs created by some of the participants in the film as well, as some other artists whose work we felt shared this vibe. Please come check out this cool display, including a life-size tube, installed in front of our building. This will remain on display through the middle of September. Participating artists include Tiffany Campbell, Thomas Campbell, Kassia Meador, Serena Mitnik-Miller, Blakeney Sanford, and John Smart. This work will be on display at Surfing Heritage through September 15, 2009.

Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing any of the artwork or photos.

Dear & Yonder Guests

On Friday, August 21, SHF hosted the final Southern California screening of Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lessler’s “Dear & Yonder.” 3 years in the making, D & Y chronicles the history of female surfers, from its inception and pioneers, right up through present day. The film explores the relationship between women and their home breaks (the Dear) as well as featuring ladies who search out waves in the far-flung corners of the Earth (the Yonder). Joining us for this screening were surf legends Linda Benson, Joyce Hoffman, and Jericho Poppler, former world champ, Sofia Mulanovich, multi-board stylist Kassia Meador, Jan Sunn-Carreira, and stopping by for his first visit, Rob Machado. Thank you to Torri Alexander, Danielle Beck, Cedar Pearsal-Carter, and the Roxy girls, to Rachel McGoye, and Zella Day for providing live music, and to our volunteers: Rita Bandaruk, Keiko Beatie, Johnathan Colbert, Stephanie Edwards, Krysla Grothe, Greg Hatleberg, Dillon Joyce, Baleigh Kasler, Michael Kelsey, Kayla Kudla, Lisa, Ron MacQuarrie, Sharon & Mike Marshall, Denny Michael, Camille Mori, Debie Pierson, Jamie & Taylor, Ron Sizemore, Erwin Spitz, Mike Vogelgesang, Laurel & Garry Warren, Duncan, Kat, & Danaan Wilson. Also, thank you to Rainbow Sandals, Roxy, Steer Crazy, Primo Beer, Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Malama Composites, Sambazon, Smart Water, Vita Water, Powerade, Surf More, Truth Soul Armor, Hobie, Terry Senate Surfboards, Heather Ritz, Girl in the Curl, Swell.com, Surfermag.com, Surfline.com, and Foam Magazine for helping to make this evening possible. Digital Watermarking of our images – Public Notice

As part of our commitment to protecting our image donors, the Surfing Heritage Foundation has begun using digital watermarking on ALL of our images, including those images seen on our website. This watermark is not visible to the eye, but is easily seen by many computer programs such at Photoshop and other image editing programs. In addition, we have also purchased a “watermark spider” that crawls the Internet specifically looking for any images that contain our SHF watermark. The Surfing Heritage Foundation is prepared to take the appropriate action should we find any illegal or unlicensed usage of images from our files.
