The Shapers Tree is the work of George Oberlian and Kendal Nishimine, originally for their web site, Essential Surfing. This printed version appeared in Surfing Magazine, hence their logo. The Surfing Heritage Foundation is proud to have their permission to feature this living document on our site. To The person who made the family tree of shappers,
I WANT YOU TO KNOW 'BRUCE GRANT' WAS NOT PUT IN THE TREE. WELL WE RECENTLY ALMOST LOST BRUCE TO A MAJOR STROKE BRUCE HAS BEEN SHAPPING FOR 47 YEARS AND HAS A BIG FOLLOWING FOR HIS SURFBOARDS ALL AROUND THE WORLD. HE WAS TAUGHT BY DEWEY WEBER, HAROLD IGGY AND DONALD TAKAYAMA. AND HE ALSO WATCHED VELZY SHAPE IN HIS EARLY YEARS. IT WOULD ONLY MAKE SENTS TO PUT HIM ON THE TREE WE WERE AT THE SACRED SURF SHOW AND SAW THE TREE AND HE WAS NOT PUT ON IT TO THE SURPISE OF MANY OTHER PEOPLE THERE. COULD WE PLEASE GET HIS NAME ON IT.

Although I appear under Jeff White's name on The Shaping Tree, the truth be told I am primarily self taught since beginning in 1959 with a major reshape of my first surfboard: a destroyed Greg Noll that my brother's friend gave to me. As far as true influences, I would cite the late John Bradbury who I rode for as a youngster, then later glassed many of his boards. Mike Hynson influenced my approach toward design in 1970 with the inception of natural rocker...........Bruce Fowler aka Deadshaper
