Frank
Davey did a similar photo along with numerous others, that are detailed
in Desoto Browns book, "Surfing: Historic Images from the Bishop
Museum".
Davey did his images in approx April 1898, but only stayed in Hawaii for 3 years.
Also
the man in Daveyʻs photo has been identified as Charles Kauha, in the
State Archives as well as by an informant of John Clark the Historian.
He notes that in his new book as well. – Tim DeLa Vega (Thanks Tim for updating this for us, this is image used on cover of his new book "Surfing in Hawaii, 1778-1930")
