ReplyDeleteIn the mid 60's I saw Ron canoe surfing what we called the Indicator at Doheny while the most of us were riding in the inner breaks at either #1. #2 or Bone Yard, with the dog sitting at the nose of the canoe. In the early 80's at D.P. harbor shop I found a book by Doris Walker which had photos of Ron & the "protest" (Ron's words) on the last day Dana Point was surfed. I was there and shocked to see me & my two surf buddies in Walkers book. I called Doris & she was kind enough to send me 8x10 of that day and give me Ron's phone number. I called him & he talked about the canoe & the 4 dogs he had over the years, he said the best was a German Shepard that could lean into the wave to help guide the canoe, I asked if he had more pictures of that day & he said yes but they were in his garage and he would never be able to find them. They were taken by a local newspaper. I called a second time & his wife answered "was a big day & I am worried because he was out with his canoe at 80 yrs(+/-)old". not knowing them I felt I had intruded in their lives enough & out of respect their kindness this was the last time. ReplyDeleteThank you for that great story...I'm Doris Walker's son, Brent. Ron was such a great friend of ours. We went out with him in his canoe (along with his 125 lb. lab Surfer) going down San Juan Creek to the ocean once, and also went out with him to watch them build the Dana Point jetties. It was always such a kick when I was 5 or 6 years old to see him canoe surf with his huge lab Surfer along for the ride.
